Introduction
Error coins can command huge premiums and are one of the funnest parts of collecting currency! Errors can occur on any type of currency across the globe. In specific, this book will cover coin and banknote errors, but in this section, we will start with coins.
Error coins come in many forms, some of which are similar in look to others. It is important to know what these errors are and to keep in mind that new errors present themselves regularly, so the hobby is always growing. If you know what to look for, you might possibly find a valuable coin right in your pocket change!
I know when I search through rolls of coins from the bank or loose pocket change, I constantly have my jeweler’s loupe on me to spot an error coin! I have found many off-center strikes, doubled dies, and a variety of other coins in pocket change. That is what makes this hobby great, anyone can look through a few loose pennies and find a coin worth hundreds of dollars!
The following section will outline each type of error you may find in you loose change and while searching local coin shops. I also include some historical price data for each coin, but these price charts are just examples and not meant to represent the exact prices of each coin.
